Gear Review : Top 10 GPS units for your car

Stuff magazine, which just launched recently in SA, features the Top 10 GPS units, for your vehicle....though the prices are in GBP, and the models may not yet be available on our shores, it gives you the leaderboard, with Tom Tom, and NOT GARMIN, right on top!

The race is on in the production and market of GPS units. As usual, there are good units and not so good units. The Tom Tom is excellent but remember it all boils down to the maps in the unit and this is where the crunch comes. While Garmin lead the pack with local detail, Tracks 4 Arica lead with accuracy. Note = you cannot load Garmin maps onto a Tom Tom unit or any other non Garmin unit. So start with the maps then choose a unit that meet's your needs. For quading off road, the only maps I use are the Garmin topographical charts. For 4x4 outings, nothing beats T4A. For street navigation with auto routing, Garmin lead but watch this space as T4A release their maps with auto routing capability and at a fraction of the cost of Garmins. For quads you should stick to a unit that is water (and dust) proof. This is where the Nuvi range falls down. Nice unit but not water proof. The eTrex range from Garmin is bullet proof but has a small screen. If your budget allows, you cant beat a Garmin 276. Happy riding...
